Course Objective The aim of course is teaching the techniques of excavation and materials used in excavations in terms of art history.
Course Content Excavation techniques of History of Art and materials which will use in excavations, dating and drawing of finds, etc. will be explained. Evaluating the research at the end of research will be explained.
Prerequisites No the prerequisite of lesson.
Corequisite No the corequisite of lesson.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
1Will be able to define the concept of excavation. Will be able to have information about the excavation types and their historical background and developments. Will be able to know the criteria for deciding the excavation sites and areas.
2Will be able to have information about the Underwater Archaeology.
3Will be able to define the preparation and the stages of the excavation. Will be able to know the evaluation of the findings and recording them for publication.
4Will be able to describe the terms of restoration, conservation and understand the importance of the protection techniques for the findings.
5Will be able to know and understand the scientific methods in dating and interpreting the findings.
6Will be able to describe the formation types of the archaeological sites. Will be able to explain the terms of insitu and stratigraphy with examples.
7Will be familiar with the excavation tools and materials. Will be able to have detailed information about the excavation techniques, top soil, cultural phase(strata) etc.
8Will be able to define the excavation techniques of square-plan and open-area. Will be able to explain the different trench opening systems such as chessboard and cross-trench.
9Will be able to make general evaluation about the excavation, the tools and materials of excavation, the techniques and methods of excavation and recording.

1 Scientific branches which contributing to Archaeology: Archaeometry, anthropology, Paleobotanic, Geomorphology and so on.
2 The basic archaeological terms (uch as building-culture layers, stratigraphy, context, site, in-situ, and so on).
3 The instruments and tools used at the excavations.
4 The pre-preparations before the excavations and the processes of field-works.
5 Examination and evaluation of the survey's results.
6 Topographical measurement equipments and their usage areas.
7 Method and excavation systems of the archaeological excavations.
8 Documentation processes of architectural remains and archaeological finds.
9 Conservation and preservation methods of the different kinds of archaeological finds.
