Course Objective Aim of the course is understand innovations and subjects of important artist to painting art in the Classical and Hellenistic Periods; know mosaic art, Pompeii style and features; put forward an idea about production techniques and dating of Egyptian and Fayyum portraits.
Course Content Developments and differences of painting art, mosaic art,light-shadow and perspective of Etruscan, Greek, Pompeii and Ephesos chronologically beginning from First Millenium B.C.will be explained

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
1To be able to understand painting techniques.
2To be able to examine the evolution and phases of antique painting art until Classical Period.
3To be able to understand the new features introduced by principal painters in the classical painting art.
4To be able to recognize the main characteristics and important painters of painting art in the 4th millennium BC.
5To be able to understand the themes and developments of Hellenistic Period painting art in Anatolia, Greece and Italy.
6To be able to examine the art of mosaic, its construction methods and its development until Byzantine period.
7To be able to recognize Pompeii styles and their main characteristics.
8To be able to have an idea about Fayyum portrait, their manufacturing techniques and their dating..
9To be able to understand the appearance, general features and themes of Christian painting art.

1 Methods of lecture and bibliography will be explained. Techniques of painting and development and phases of Painture in Antiquity until Archaic Age will be summarized.
2 Subjects of Classical Period paintings and contributions of artists such as Polygnotos, Mikon, Parrhasios and Zeuxis will be explained with examples.
3 General features of Painture in 4th century B.C., lighting-shading, Kazanlık grave paintings, artists of the century and their contribution to the painture will be explained with examples.
4 Paintings revealed in Macedonia-Tumuli of Vergina which belong to 4th century B.C., their subjects and features will be explained with examples.
5 Paintings of Hellenistic Period, their subjects and development will be explained with examples from Greece, Italy and Anatolia.
6 Appearance of Mosaic Art, techniques of making, development and subjects of mosaics will be explained beginning from The Gordion Mosaic, which is the first mosaic, until Byzantine Period.
7 General information about Pompeii and Herculaneum ancient cities, techniques, information quoted from ancient sources, Pompeian styles and features of paintings found in Pompeii will be given.
8 Information about houses of Pompeian 1st Style, techniques of masonry and ground mosaics will be given.
9 Information about houses of Pompeian 2nd Style, appearance of wall paintings, their features and subjects will be given.
10 Information about houses of Pompeian 3rd Style, features and subjects of wall paintings will be given.
11 Information about houses of Pompeian 4th Style, features and subjects of wall paintings will be given.
12 Appearance of portraiture in painture, Egyptian Fayum mummy portraits, techniques of making and dating them will be explained.
13 Features of Ephesus Slope Houses, features of paintings and mosaics found here will be explained.
14 Appearance of Christian Painture, general features, subjects and techniques will be explained.
