WESTERN LANGUAGES AND LITERATURES DEPARTMENT

General Information

Department of Western Languages and Literatures aims to teach advanced knowledge on French and English literatures. Department of Western Languages and Literatures includes these programs: English Language and Literature MA Program, French Language and Literature MA Program and English Language and Literature PHD program. Students of English Language and Literature MA Program and French Language and Literature MA Program are required to have at least 6 terms including thesis preparation, while students of English Language and Literature PHD program are required to have at least 10 terms including thesis preparation. These postgraduate programs teach how to do advanced researches on languages and literatures of English and French, how to carry on methodological analysis and how to apply critical approaches. In other words, the programs provide the students with the skills to have different perspectives, make comparisons, interpretations and analysis both on language and literature.


Objective

The main aim of the department is to provide advanced education on Western Literatures and culture and teach methods of scientific research. In this context, students are given courses on critical theories on language and literature to analyse literary texts. At the same time, by giving comparative language and literary courses, different cultures are presented to students to enable them to pursue comparative studies both on their and other cultures. Postgraduate programs in the department aims to teach the relationship between language and literature and to develop advanced reading, writing and research skills enough to carry on scientific researhces and, thereby, to prepare them for the academic future.
